Staying in Vardø
Vardø is both Norway’s easternmost town and one of its oldest. An island itself, it is the gateway to Hornøya by way of a 10-minute boat ride from the harbour. Vardø is rich in history; from the famous witch trials of the 17th century, to the thriving Pomor trade with Russia spanning more than 100 years, to the town’s German occupation in the 1940s. Vardø also offers fantastic wildlife encounters. Steller’s and King Eiders use the harbour in winter and spring, and summer brings the chance to see Bluethroats, breeding Arctic Skuas and many species of wading birds. White-tailed Eagles, Gyrfalcons and White-beaked Dolphins could be seen around the town all year round.
